It was so exciting speaking with Jay Powell on my 'Love Your Kitchen' podcast for this weeks episode! I actually had the pleasure of knowing Jay at Loughborough University, which feels like a lifetime ago when we were both 'free spirited' design students and not the polished professionals we are claiming to be today!
This episode is jam packed with useful takeaways, discussing everything from sink styles and sizes, natural material choices, sustainability considerations, appliance placement, layout preferences, colour palettes, flooring options, and much much more! We emphasise balancing functionality, practicality, and personalisation to create a timeless and inspiring space.
Jay talks about his take on certain design considerations and the ideology behind them like 'eliminating corners' and 'allowing the room to breath' which are universal to any design. We also discuss how incorporating natural materials into your kitchen is a must to create a timeless kitchen design! Different woods are best to use in different parts of your kitchen, and can be finished to withstand the pressure of a working kitchen environment. Our main topic of conversation was of course discussing Jay's award-winning design for the prestigious 2024 KBB award for 'Kitchen Designer of the Year: Project Cost Over £50,000' which is a VERY big deal! I always refer to the KBB magazine (Kitchen, Bedroom's & Bathroom's) as the 'Vogue' magazine of our industry so I was very happy to hear the news when Jay was announced the winner for his category! Here is the winning design below!
